            The Table of the Lord

          Altar

        –

When architect Jairo Leon asked David Bates, owner

of Castille Wood Products in Baton Rouge, to build an altar and

credence table for Sister Dulce, he did not hesitate to say yes. Like

so many, David had heard of Sister Dulce and knew she was a special

person. Because of the heavy workload at his shop, David decided to

build and finish the pieces himself. David said, “Normally, I work

in our office, run the business and take care of everyday operations.

So, when I do have to work in the shop it can be rather hectic and

stressful trying to focus on the task at hand while worrying about

all the other things going on with the company. Not once did I feel

that way while working on this. It’s hard to explain, but there was

a distinct calm and peaceful feeling in me and around me during

the whole process. It has truly been an honor and a blessing to be

involved with Sr. Dulce’s Chapel of Divine Providence.”

The chapel altar is made of Sapele, a wood reminiscent of

mahogany. Sapele is characterized by its durability and beautiful

        graining.

The altar front, featuring the Lamb of God

with the seven seals, as well as the Communion

gate were acquired by Curt and Mary Burns

from Mandeville, Louisiana from an auction

in Hammond, LA. This is the original altar

front from Hôtel-Dieu in New Orleans. In

        1859,

        Hôtel-Dieu, known today as University

Hospital, was founded, owned and operated

by the Daughters of Charity. This American

order of nuns was founded by Saint Elizabeth

Ann Bayley Seton and is affiliated with the

Daughters of Charity in France. Hôtel-Dieu,

French for “House of God,” was the only

private hospital in New Orleans to stay open

during the Civil War. Additionally, Hôtel-Dieu

treated New Orleanians through the yellow

fever epidemics of 1853 and 1897, and it was

the first hospital in the United States to air-

        condition its surgical areas (1913).

The magnificent sanctuary lamp came from

Spain, but was obtained by Curt and Mary Burns at an auction in

        Austin, TX.

        –

        Ben Dombey became fascinated

with glass just before attending Tulane University in New

Orleans. His passion for glass grew and after graduating from

Tulane University in New Orleans, he was creating his own work,

assisting local artists and teaching glassblowing at public studios

in NewOrleans. In summer 2010, Ben moved to upstate NewYork

to pursue a Masters of Fine Arts degree in glass at the prestigious

Rochester Institute of Technology. Chef John Folse commissioned

Ben in spring 2010 to create the sanctuary lamp globe in the shape

of a flame inspired by a sketch from Sister Dulce. As Sister, John

and Ben discussed the flame, John

        suggested that the flame should

        also include the SacredHeart with

thorns. With the image of the

Sacred Heart in mind, Ben blew

glass that was colored with small

pieces of colored glass called frit.

The crown of thorns and drops of

blood were laid onto the glass

        using colored glass cane. Ben,

        of Jewish faith, was privileged

        to create the sanctuary lamp

globe, which will be enjoyed by

        generations to come.

          Created by glass artist Ben

          Dombey; Commissioned by

          Chef John Folse.
