twelve became the 12 Apostles after Jesus rose
from the dead and “sent them out to carry the
Gospel to the world”. There are only 12 Apostles
because they are the only ones specifically
handpicked and sent out by Jesus Himself.
The church does not have apostles today---
there were only 12, just like there were only 12
tribes of Israel in the Old Testament. On the other
hand, though,
every Christian is a disciple of
Christ.

Did you know...
We often hear the chosen twelve being
referred to as disciples and apostles of Jesus.
Which is it? What is the difference between an
apostle and a disciple? When you live out your
faith, what do you become?
The word ‘disciple’ simply means “a learner,
pupil”. Anyone who determines to learn the
teachings of another is a “disciple,” and in the
military analogy, these are the “foot soldiers”
of the cause. They are not appointed; they
enlist.
‘
Apostle’ literally means “a delegate, a
messenger, one sent forth with orders.” The
Apostles were appointed, and given specific
tasks and responsibilities. (To use a military
analogy, the apostles would have been “high-
ranking officers”). Jesus had many disciples,
but the twelve especially chosen ones are
specifically called the 12 Disciples. Those
